Armed police have searched baches on Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf for a gunman and his apparent hostage as the drama enters its second day.

Police, including members of the armed offenders squad, raced to the island late on Thursday night after a woman was allegedly abducted by her former boyfriend and her new boyfriend hit on the head with a weapon thought to be a crowbar.

The injured man was taken to Auckland Hospital where he was in a stable condition.

Police have not named the man or the woman they believe he kidnapped, but she is reported to be Nortessa Montgomerie, 20.

Police have released a statement saying they have found the male and female they have been searching for in the vicinity of Claris.

Residents of the Hauraki Gulf island were warned to lock cars and homes and stay inside.

Rain hampered the search last night, and police concern for Ms Montgomerie's safety and wellbeing was increasing.

Low mist was also thought to be causing problems for the searchers today.

As well as the armed offenders squad, the police team also had a specialist search and rescue team, three search dogs, and several investigators.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said they went to the Claris address on the eastern side of the island, after reports that a man had been seriously assaulted.

He was concerned there had been no sighting of the missing woman or her alleged abductor for more than 24 hours.

"The status of the search and the investigation is fluid.

"We have yet to fully determine what has happened after the victim was assaulted.

"We are receiving both assistance and co-operation from the local island community in our search."

He said all holiday homes and baches in the Claris area had been visited, and the Westpac rescue helicopter flew over the area about 10.30am in an aerial surveillance of the island.
