Mitsubishi Electric Announces New Ultra-High-Speed Elevator Technologies

Engineerblogger
Feb 3, 2012

Shanghai Tower will represent China's dynamic 'future

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation announced today its new suite of technologies that enable ultra-high-speed elevators to travel faster than 1,000 meters per minute, or 60 kph, with enhanced efficiency, comfort and safety. The technologies will be incorporated in the world's fastest elevators, including those developed by Mitsubishi Electric for the 632-meter Shanghai Tower under construction in Shanghai, China.

In response to the increasing height of high-rise buildings amid continuing urban population growth, the role of elevators is gaining even greater importance. In response, Mitsubishi Electric is developing advanced solutions incorporating technologies and equipment for enhanced drive and controllability, safety, super high-rise cable mechanics and passenger comfort. The company's new suite of ultra-high-speed elevator technologies includes the following advancements:

1.  Drive and Controllability
  • The traction motor incorporates a permanent magnetic motor for energy-efficient, low-noise, low-vibration operation.
  • A single motor has two grouped three-phase winding coils and parallel drive systems controlled by separate control panels. Each motor has a built-in converter to regenerate electricity, lowering power consumption by more than 30 percent.
  • Brakes composed of two units with a hydraulic driven clamp-type disk brake achieve stable braking.

2.  Safety

  • Safety gears, which activate the brakes by grasping the guide rails in emergencies if cables become transected, comprise two stages to manage increased kinetic energy due to ultra-high speeds.
  • Fine ceramic is used for the safety gear shoe to realize high resistance to heat, abrasion and shock. Braking is extra-stable even if high frictional heat is generated when the safety gear is activated.
  • The hydraulic oil buffer (shock absorber) at the bottom of the elevator shaft has an advanced plunger comprising three stages for exceptional shock absorption within a shortened frame.
  • Newly developed governor monitors elevator speed stably even with heavy loads placed by ropes traveling at high speeds over long distances.

3.  Super high-rise cable mechanics

  • A steel core with a wider diameter provides high intensity, allowing traveling cables to be lightened by using lightweight sheath material and operated by a highly efficient electric power carrier system.
  • Mitsubishi Electric's new "sfleX-rope" comprising bundles of high-intensity steel wire strands, each covered with plastic, offers higher intensity than conventional rope for safe operation despite the greater weight of longer ropes. Each wire has a higher density and wider cross-sectional area than conventional rope, which helps to reduce rope stretching caused when passengers step onto the elevator.

4.  Ride comfort
  •   A new active roller guide, which reduces vibration from the guide rails and wind, enhances passenger comfort even at ultra-high speeds.
  •   The inside of the car is extra-quiet thanks to a streamlined aerodynamic car cover and a high sound insulation cage.
  • Air pressure control helps to minimize rapid changes in atmospheric pressure for reduced ear discomfort.

Just like cars, going that fast also leads to the question of safety – rest assured that Mitsubishi will deliver enhanced efficiency, comfort and safety as thousands of people traverse through these elevators each day. Fine ceramic is the material of choice for the safety gear shoe as it has a high resistance to heat, abrasion and shock. Never mind if high frictional heat is generated, braking remains extremely stable.

MHI Develops Bulk Carrier Enabling Reduction in Emissions

Engineerblogger
Oct 17, 2011

Bubbles under the vessel bottom of the new bulk carrier with MALS

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has developed a new bulk carrier which will enable reductions in CO2 emissions by about 25% compared with conventional averaged bulk carriers. As the first commercial application of the new design, MHI will provide its conceptual design and green technologies to three grain carriers to be built for Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) of the U.S. MHI's new bulk carrier design adopts the company's proprietary Mitsubishi Air Lubrication System (MALS), which reduces frictional resistance between the vessel hull and seawater using air bubbles produced at the vessel bottom, along with high-efficiency hull form and enhanced propulsion system. Sumitomo Corporation of Japan has received the order for the ship construction from ADM, and Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. of Nagasaki was selected to build the ships.

Newly developed bulk carrier with MALS

Besides the MALS, which uses blowers to create air bubbles under the vessel bottom, the three grain carriers will also feature a newly designed bow shape that will reduce wave-making resistances. For propulsion, the ship adopts a system to effectively convert the main engine power into propulsion power by positioning fins forward of the propellers and placing particular grooves in the propeller boss cap. MHI developed the MALS as a key measure to reduce CO2 emissions from ships. ADM's ships will be the first case in which MHI provides the system to another shipbuilder.

The three grain carriers will be 95,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT) vessels: 237 meters (m) in length, 40m in width, and 12.5m in designed draught. The shallow draught of the ships facilitates the pursuit of energy savings and CO2 emission reduction efficiency by MALS. Oshima Shipbuilding will perform from the basic design work through construction based on the conceptual design and green technologies provided by MHI. Delivery of equipment related to MALS system from MHI is slated for 2014.

The talks to build the three dry bulk carriers began between ADM and MHI. MHI's Shipbuilding & Ocean Development segment has been implementing a policy to promote engineering business, including technological support to other shipbuilders. Under this policy, the company decided to collaborate for this time with Oshima Shipbuilding, a firm that has earned a solid reputation in bulk carrier design and construction through delivery/order receipt of about 60 post-Panamax* class ships. The collaboration has enabled the two companies to provide enhanced cost effectiveness to the customer.

ADM is one of the U.S.'s top-ranking grain companies. The three bulk carriers, which mark the first new shipbuilding order placed by ADM, are designed to accommodate new post-Panamax* needs.

The new bulk carriers are designed to make an important contribution to international efforts to fight global warming, a demand that is especially strong in the case of oceangoing vessels. Going forward MHI will continue to accord priority to the development of vessels addressing CO2 reduction needs by focusing on development of its "Eco-ship" and sales expansion of related systems and equipment.

Note: "Post-Panamax class" refers to the ships that are unable to travel through the Panama Canal and "new post-Panamax" refers to the size limit of ships that will be able to travel through the Panama Canal after its planned expansion is completed in 2014: 366m in length overall (LOA), 49m in width and 15.2m in tropical freshwater (TFW) draft. Panamax parameters are 295.0 m in LOA, 32.2 m in width and 12.0 m in draft.

Nissan, Mitsubishi strengthen cooperation

Engineerblogger
Sept 22, 2011

Japanese automakers Nissan and Mitsubishi are strengthening their cooperation by expanding the number of models they make for each other in Japan.

Nissan and its smaller rival Mitsubishi have had what is called an original equipment manufacturer, or OEM, deal since December 2010. They manufacture specific vehicle models for each other and sell them under their own brands.

Nissan Motor Co. said Thursday it will provide the Fuga luxury sedan to Mitsubishi Motors Corp., starting from summer next year.

They have also started talks on Mitsubishi providing the Minicab-MiEV commercial electric car to Nissan in the fiscal year that begins April 2012.

Such OEM deals are fairly common in the auto industry. They allow companies to cut costs by increasing production scale and to expand their lineup of types of cars they don't want to invest in the development or manufacturing of.

Under an earlier agreement, Nissan, which also makes the Leaf electric car and March subcompact, is providing the NV200 Vanette compact van to Mitsubishi Motors from next month.

They also set up a joint venture called NMKV Co., which began operating in June, to work together on minicars for the Japanese market, which may later include other nations.

Mitsubishi President Osamu Masuko has said he hopes the joint venture will fuse his company's design expertise with Nissan's purchasing power.

"These initiatives are intended to strengthen the competitiveness of both companies in Japan," both sides said in a statement.

2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback Ralliart Specs, Prices and Reviews

America’s love for sedans is, like a lot of American quirks, not universally embraced beyond our borders.

More practical five-door hatchbacks are the rage in Europe and Asia, and as such, Mitsubishi had to build one to be competitive overseas with its Lancer compact sedan. The only question is whether that hatch should come to the U.S.

Well, whether it should or shouldn’t be coming, it is. Sales of the 2010 Lancer Sportback wagon commence around September 1. The 168-hp GTS starts at $19,910 with a five-speed manual and $20,910 with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The 237-hp all-wheel-drive Ralliart with a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual starts at $28,310, just a couple hundred dollars higher than the sedan.

Sleek and Spacious

Where the Lancer has a trunk, the Lancer Sportback has a steeply raked hatchback that looks swept and sporty. Compared with the similarly situated Subaru Impreza WRX five-door, the Sportback sits on almost the same wheelbase but is nearly seven inches longer than the WRX, giving it heavier front and rear overhangs in side profile. There’s less cargo room behind the seats in the Sportback, 14 cubic feet versus 19 in the WRX, but more space if you fold the seats: 47 cubic feet against the Subaru’s 44.

Specifications

VEHICLE TYPE: front-engine, 4-wheel-drive, 5-passenger, 5-door wagon
PRICE AS TESTED: $28,310 (base price: $28,310)
ENGINE TYPE: turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 16-valve inline-4, aluminum block and head, port fuel injection
Displacement: 122 cu in, 1998cc
Power (SAE net): 237 bhp @ 6000 rpm
Torque (SAE net): 253 lb-ft @ 2500 rpm
TRANSMISSION: 6-speed dual-clutch automated manual
DIMENSIONS:
Wheelbase: 103.7 in Length: 180.4 in Width: 69.4 in Height: 59.7 in Curb weight (C/D est): 3600 lb
PERFORMANCE (C/D EST):
Zero to 60 mph: 5.8 sec
Standing ¼-mile: 14.5 sec
Top speed (governor limited): 144 mph

FUEL ECONOMY:
EPA city/highway driving: 17/25 mpg

The Sportback’s rear seats are comfortable and spacious, and they conveniently fold flat via release handles in the trunk area. It’s no Buick Estate Wagon back there, but the loading hole is large, and there’s room for bulky items with the seats folded. For additional volume, the GTS has a removable cargo floor hiding a bin, but a taller muffler rearranges the floor layout to prevent it in the Ralliart.

Not an Evolution

As in the Ralliart sedan, the Sportback Ralliart runs a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder based on the shared world engine also used by Chrysler and Hyundai. At 237 hp, it’s notably down on power compared with the 265-hp WRX and feels it, partly because of the Sportback’s higher curb weight. The only transmission in the Sportback Ralliart is Mitsubishi’s TC-SST dual-clutch six-speed. We’re told that the software in our preproduction car is outdated and that Mitsubishi has smoothed over some of the harder edges of the upshifts with improved shift logic.

Running a mountain twisty, the Sportback proved it’s a good balance of ride comfort and handling, even better than the WRX, which skews to rather soft and roll prone. Corners are attacked with a tangibly stronger connection through the wheel and more confidence in the grip, and there’s no discernible added flex from the giant hole cut for the hatchback.

Still the Precision Instrument

In short, the Lancer Sportback is bigger and about 200 pounds heavier than the comparable WRX but is a sharper stick for jabbing at your favorite roads. Around town, it doesn’t oppress with an overly rigid ride, so we’d say Mitsubishi has found the better suspension compromise for sport-minded drivers. All it needs to find is more horsepower. Wagons, ahoy! Learn More...

2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Specs, Prices and Reviews

Parents looking for an aggressively sporty, small crossover with the ability to rock out should look no further than the all-new 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. It's probably not the first vehicle that comes to mind when "small crossover" is uttered, but that doesn't mean the Outlander Sport shouldn't be considered. It's sportier than most, and as I implied, it's got a killer stereo.

 Starting MSRP $18,495 – $22,995

The 2011 Outlander Sport is more dude-like than your average small crossover. Its trapezoidal grille matches that of its Lancer Evolution sibling and looks more on the lean-mean-driving-machine side than some of its daisy-picking competition.

It looks shark-like, and its 148-horsepower inline-four-cylinder is peppy enough for everyday driving and can be pushed to be aggressive. Also, the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters kept me feeling race-inspired. My one hang up was the continuously variable automatic transmission. I'm trying to love CVTs, but the constant high-pitched revs in the Outlander Sport make it difficult. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on the base Outlander Sport ES.

Regardless, the Outlander Sport is a distinctive standout in a market segment with growing appeal and interesting models. My test car, an Outlander Sport SE with all-wheel drive, cost $25,575. The base front-wheel drive model starts at $18,495.

EXTERIOR
The Outlander Sport has a sleek look. There's a little overbite on the grille, and narrow headlights that make it look menacing. Any parent driving it would look sporty in the carpool lane.

Parental concerns are few in the Outlander Sport. The doors are easy to open for everyone except smaller kids. Young ones also might have difficulty climbing into the car, but older kids should be able to jump in without any problems. The liftgate is not too heavy or too high. It's just right, Goldilocks!

The cargo area is large enough for a grocery run, but not a double stroller. In the backseat, there's a pass-through to the cargo area, which is handy if you want your kids to bust into the Oreos before you get home from the grocery store. Be careful not to obscure the massive speakers back there with boring parent stuff, otherwise your groove will not be completely on.

The Outlander Sport has a 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder engine. My all-wheel-drive test car gets an EPA-estimated 24/29 mpg city/highway; for better gas mileage, the front-wheel-drive model with a CVT gets 25/31 mpg. In addition, you can use regular unleaded gas in the Outlander Sport and avoid taking out a second mortgage to pay for it.

SENSE AND STYLE
Family Friendly (Not Really, Fair, Great, Excellent): Great
Fun-Factor (None, Some, Good Times, Groove-On): Good Times

INTERIOR
The Outlander Sport's interior is simple but not plain. There are enough chrome- and metal-looking accents to keep the interior from being boring.

The climate controls are in the form of easy-to-decipher knobs, and the stereo system is straightforward, which I appreciated even though it looks dated with its dot-matrix display. Between that and the Rockford Fosgate logo, I felt like I was back in 1988. Those were good times, but an update wouldn't hurt, either.

The Outlander Sport's Bluetooth hands-free phone system was a piece of cake to use. The instrument cluster had a more modern readout than the stereo, and I loved that it said, "See You" whenever I turned the car off. Hopefully, it didn't say "Wouldn't want to be you" after I got out and closed the door.

The five-passenger crossover only comes with fabric upholstery, which is usually tough for parents to maintain. Add to the fact that it's black and you know that every piece of lint, Goldfish cracker and other miscellaneous goo will be easy for the whole world to see. Fortunately, there was a cool-looking square pattern on the fabric to help camouflage the kid debris.

The front seats are comfortable and bolstered just enough that they made me feel snug in them. The backseat bench isn't bolstered, and there's a surprising amount of legroom in the second row.

IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT COUNT
Storage Compartments (Puny, Fair, Ample, Galore): Ample
Cargo/Trunk Space (Puny, Fair, Ample, Galore): Ample

SAFETY
The two sets of Latch anchors in the Outlander Sport are simple to use. But the Outlander Sport has a problem that I'm seeing more often: The seat belt buckles are placed too close to the doors. This means the seat is too narrow for a booster seat base, causing it to slide over the buckle. In the Outlander Sport, my child had to hold the booster to one side while she hops back on it and tries to buckle up before the seat creeps over the buckle. This might be more annoying than floppy seat belt buckles.

A rear-facing infant-safety seat fit if the front passenger was willing to sacrifice a little legroom, and a forward-facing convertible seat fit easily in the Outlander Sport's backseat. To find out how the Outlander Sport performed in MotherProof.com's Car Seat Check, click here.

The Outlander Sport has numerous safety features. It has standard all-disc antilock brakes, front-wheel drive, an electronic stability system, traction control and seven airbags, including a driver's knee airbag and side curtains for both rows.

Optional safety features include all-wheel drive and a backup camera, which is part of a $2,000 navigation package.

Mitsubishi Outlander Reinforced Safety

Buying the Mitsubishi Outlander: We needed a seven seater that was higher than a normal sedan (to get the kids in easily), wasn't too heavy on fuel, that would hold its resale value, wasn't too big and not too expensive. This meant buying a seven seater Japanese SUV (the Japanese cars hold their value better than other cars here in Australia). Due to the limited range of SUV's that meet our criteria, we settled on a white 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander 2.4 LS.

The new Limited and Limited AWD have heated leather seats, front side airbags, heated outside mirrors, and body-colored fender flares and air dams.

Safety equipment includes three-point seatbelts for all five seating positions. Both front seats feature seatbelt pretensioner and force-limiter technology, which can help reduce injuries in an accident. Also standard are: child safety seat anchors. Anti-lock brakes are optional on the XLS and Limited models; ABS helps the driver maintain control of the car in an emergency braking situation.

2011 The Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart

Taking it to the highway, it was fantastic. Stepping on the gas you get instant power, and extremely smooth shifting thanks to the new gearbox. It was just unbelievably good. Sorry to the local law enforcement, but I got the car up to 130mph before I decided to slow down. Guess you would have had to be there to catch me. I then pulled off to the country roads, set the mode to S-Sport, and took it to the corners. It goes around them really fast, but it just feels so smooth. It's almost perfection at it's best. If I could, I would drive 45 minutes away from here to the nearest road course and beat the hell out of this car, but I guess that's not for me to do.
