2012 Land Rover Defender

The newest EU5 2.2-litre diesel engine takes the place of the EU4 2.4-litre diesel while matching it for power, torque and fuel consumption. A fresh, full acoustic engine cover replaces the prior splash cover, decreasing radiated engine noise and enhancing driving sophistication. Getting together with EU5 rules, the engine provides reduced levels of the controlled emissions, NOx, CO and HC due to a much better combustion system and innovative engine managing system.

Regardless of the lesser capacity and lowered emissions, the new engine generates the same power, 122PS@3,500rpm and torque, 360Nm@2,000rpm, as the outgoing 2.4-litre engine. Performance stays equivalent too, although the top speed is raised to 90mph in comparison to 82mph for the former edition. CO2 emissions on the joint cycle are steady at 266g/km for the 90 and 295g/km for the 110 and 130.

The GFT MT 82 six-speed gearbox has been kept for 2012 featuring its excellent ratio spread, high top gear for cruising and boosted low-speed crawl potential. The reduced first gear offers low crawl speed making towing on-road and off-road incredibly easier. The low-down engine torque can also help in-gear velocity and the tall sixth gear guarantees exceptional real-world cruising, refinement and fuel economy. Ground gears both in the gearbox and transfer box help promote the sophistication of the transmission.

The 2012 Land Rover Defender is offered from £20,995 on the highway and will be in the UK from November 2011.

2011 Land Rover LR4 Specs, Prices, Pics and Reviews

Compared with its predecessor, the LR4 luxury SUV is much more appealing for shoppers who'd like to conquer rugged off-road trails and go for a night on the town all in the same SUV.

Land Rover's improvements also make the LR4 a legitimate competitor to SUVs like the Audi Q7 and Mercedes-Benz M-Class.

It's better because it features a dapper cabin something that was sorely missing from the previous version, the LR3 and a new V-8 engine that makes 75 more horsepower than the LR3's V-8, but with the same EPA estimated gas mileage: a still-thirsty 12/17 mpg city/highway.

Land Rover's top-of-the-line Range Rover has excelled at being a multifaceted SUV for years, thanks to its on- and off-road performance, and the LR4 promises most of that versatility — for quite a bit less cash.

The Look

"LR4" is a new name for Land Rover, but if you're familiar with the brand's lineup, you'll instantly think of the outgoing LR3 when you see it. In profile, the two SUVs look nearly identical. The primary styling differences are in front and around back.

Changes to the front include new headlights and a new grille that bring the LR4's styling more in line with the rest of Land Rover's lineup. The rear gets new taillights. The styling is still distinctly Land Rover, with its upright, angular elements, which should satisfy the brand faithful. To see a side-by-side comparison with the 2009 LR3,click here.

Driving It

The LR4's ride quality brought the Range Rover to mind. Thestandard height-adjustable air suspension is tuned for comfort, and it wasn't even ruffled by the rough roads you inevitably encounter in Chicago, where I spent the majority of my time driving the LR4. Even though the LR4 is a tall SUV, with 7.3 inches of ground clearance in the suspension's regular mode, it doesn't exhibit excessive body rollin corners, which is a confidence-booster for drivers.

The LR4's curb weight is a hefty 5,703 pounds, but it feels swift for a big SUV. Credit the new 375-hp, 5.0-liter V-8, which is standard. The engine features direct-injection technology and pulls strongly when accelerating at midrange speeds. There's power to spare on the highway — though not as much as you might expect from a 375-hp V-8.

In a luxury SUV, how the engine delivers its power is just as important as how much power it has, and the LR4's V-8 is smooth and refined. It works with a six-speed automatic transmission that knocks off smooth shifts, though it can be a bit hesitant to kick downat highway speeds when more power is needed.

One thing shoppers will immediately like about the LR4 when they get behind the wheel is the great forward views afforded by its elevated seating position. You sit a lot higher than most vehicles on the road, and that gives you a good view of what's happening in front of you. The windshield and side windows are also big, putting the higher stance to good use as far as visibility is concerned.

The suspension tuning feels firmer when you take the LR4 up to highway speeds. Up there, bumps and cracks in the road that were easily damped at lower speeds become more noticeable.

Overall, the interior is very quiet. Not many outside noises make it into the cabin, and those that do are muted enough that they're not distracting. Well done, Land Rover. Learn More...

2011 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Specs, Prices, Pics and Reviews

Land Rover's venerable Range Rover can tackle tough off-road terrain that would foil less-capable SUVs, yet it still has the cachet to warrant a front-and-center parking space at an upscale hotel.

Much of the Range Rover's style and off-road-ready hardware has carried over to the automaker's less expensive Range Rover Sport.

To be clear, the Range Rover is unrelated to the Range Rover Sport.Aside from changes to option package content and new exterior colors, there are no significant changes for 2011.

  • Standard 19-inch alloy wheels with low-profile tires
  • Standard skid plates
  • Standard rear spoiler
  • 20-inch wheels optional
  • Optional adaptive headlights swivel to better illuminate turns

Interior
A 5-inch LCD screen within the instrument cluster houses an information display. The Range Rover Sport's five-person interior is trimmed with simulated metal pieces; real wood trim is also available. 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Specs and Reviews

The all-new Range Rover Evoque marks a shift of sorts for Land Rover. The automaker is known primarily in the U.S. for building boxy, capable SUVs,

but the Evoque is a decidedly sportier and sleeker luxury crossover aimed at models like the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60. Offered in two- and four-door body styles, the Evoque hits dealerships in fall 2011.

Exterior
The new Evoque looks quite a bit like Land Rover's LRX concept from a few years ago. It's an athletic-looking crossover that has quite a bit of presence despite its relatively small footprint.

The Evoque is wide and low-slung — something many Land Rovers aren't —but its front-end styling still makes it instantly recognizable as a Land Rover. Available exterior features include:
  • Panoramic moonroof
  • Xenon adaptive headlights
  • Power liftgate
  • Heated windshield
  • 20-inch wheels
  • Contrasting roof colors

Interior
Like in Land Rover's high-dollar Range Rover, the design of the Evoque's center console gives the impression that it's extending into the upper reaches of the dashboard. Premium materials are used, and there's a twist-knob gear selector instead of a traditional shifter. Available interior features include:

  • 8-inch touch-screen
  • Navigation system
  • Dual-zone automatic air conditioning
  • Premium Meridian audio system
  • Surround Camera System with five cameras

Under the Hood
The Evoque is powered by a 240-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that teams with a six-speed automatic transmission. Power is routed to the road through a permanent all-wheel-drive system, and Land Rover's Terrain Response technology provides enhanced off-road capability.

Safety
Safety features include:
  • Antilock brakes
  • Electronic stability system with Roll Stability Control
  • Corner Brake Control for greater braking stability when cornering
  • Side-impact and side curtain airbags
  • Front knee airbags

Khan Design's Freelander 2 also uses the new Land Rover Freelander 2

The project Khan Freelander 2 adds 20" RS-C alloy (or chrome) rims and a few changes on the exterior as well as the interior features. The interior is provided with leather seats, word steering wheels, revised trim (with some optional high gloss grand Black Lacquer Finish) and of course it will not be complete without its in-car video entertainment system.

Khan Design's Freelander 2 also uses the new Land Rover Freelander 2 factory performance body kit which is not yet officially introduced yet by Land Rover but most UK dealers have them already in their showrooms and are being offered with the rest of high quality Rover Freelander parts.

2011 The Defender X-Tech Limited Edition

With the vast range of models and specs on offer it may be a little daunting to the first time buyer. However don't be overwhelmed by the choices, because visiting a good specialist used Land Rover dealership means that you will be able to talk through your requirements with experienced sales staff who can advise on the model that best suits your needs. This applies to any used vehicle, and a specialist dealership should be your first port of call to avoid disappointedly kicking the tyres of a rust bucket that looks nothing like the "good as new, one careful lady owner" car that you were expecting.

As I was only borrowing this particular used Land Rover Defender for a few hours, I thought it prudent to avoid any off-road adventures. However travelling the back roads made it clear that the advances in technology have only served to enhance the performance of the Defender. I barely felt a jolt as I mounted the grass at the side of a single-lane country road in order to let another driver pass. And whilst I may love the classic models, one can't exactly pretend that they provide the most comfortable of rides over rougher terrain. The improved suspension of the updated Defender meant that even a vicious-looking pothole evoked merely a shrug from the vehicle.

The 2010 LR4 has been updated for the best all-terrain performance with the Dynamic Stability Control System and an updated Terrain Response; allowing the LR4 5L V8 to surpass the luxury, sport, as well as the engine capacity of the LR3. The 2010 offers an option of the 5L V8 375hp as well as the 510bhp supercharged engine providing two light weight engines that don't drain the gas you would think. All in all, the added power just makes the LR4 a heck of a lot of fun to drive in all types of terrain.

Land Rover Defender 90 Yachting Edition

It's really just a name change to distinguish its line of models that became increasingly necessary to do in the 80s. When LandRover ended its Series III line of 4WD off road SUVs in 1983, it did just that with the introduction of the Land Rover 90 3-door model and 110 5-door station wagon models based on wheelbase lengths.

Finished in a bright white color, the Defender 90 Yachting Edition rolls on 16-inch alloys wrapped around in wider tires measuring 267/75 R16. Complementing the 4x4's looks are new running boards with integrated entrance lights that are activated via the keyless fob or by opening one of the doors, an SVX grille and body-colored headlight covers.

2011 The Land Rover Defender

The iconic British marque Land Rover sports the familiar profile that has been in the minds of the general public since it started in 1948. For about 37 years, they went through minimal styling changes from its Series I through Series III and never really ended with the last Series III rolling of the Solihull factory in 1985.

Cruising its way to the Essen Motor Show floors, is the sea-flavored Land Rover Defender 90 Yachting Edition, created by Brabus affiliate Startech. And while it ain't an amphibious off-roader, this Defender takes its styling inspiration from -you guessed it- maritime themes.
